Why do you do what you do?
A very successful business owner and friend of mine recommended I watch Simon Sinek’s talk on his book “Start with Why.”

Although I had heard a podcast of Simon speak before and based off my brother Jon’s recommendation had bought his book over a year ago I had not yet read it. I am now looking forward to reading it this weekend. In his speech he explained that almost all businesses present their product or service backwards. Most companies simply promote “what” they do. However, the pioneers in business that exceed all their competitors start with “why” they do what they do.
His quote that that opened my eyes was, “Why do you get out of bed to do what you do? Why should anyone care?”
This is powerful. It was not until a couple years ago that I was blessed to meet someone that specialized in helping businesses “brand” themselves. The brand is “why” you do what you do. The” why” embodies who you truly are. Once he helped me create a brand I almost immediately saw my business accelerate and I was having people engage me in conversation about what my brand meant and it allowed me to not talk about what I do, but why I do it. I was able for the first time to introduce my products and services by sharing my story.
What is your story?
I have always been a believer in the concept that people purchase you, not your product or service. The reality is that there are numerous professionals and companies out there that can literally offer the same type of products and services you do. So why do they buy from you? Because they BELIEVE in you. They share a common belief that what you offer and more importantly why you offer it is the right thing for them to invest in.
Starting today, when people ask, “What do you do?”, tell them your story. Tell them the reason “why” you do what you do and allow them to connect and start to believe in your business as much as you do.
