Have you ever had that moment when you could literally FEEL the frustration of your bad habits reaching its boiling point with your significant other?

Have you PROMISED again and again that you’ll change that habit??

That was me for the last 3 years. “Yes dear, I won’t do it again. I know, it won’t happen again. I promise!”

Despite what some people say, promises were NOT meant to be broken. However, we find ourselves promising the people we care about that we will change for them. Sometimes we truly do want to change, but can’t seem to figure out how.

Here’s how I kept my wife from smothering in my sleep by changing from a “night owl” to an “early bird.” (I am exaggerating on the intensity of the situation, but I assure you it was not going well.)

Matt Cutts talks about “Trying Something New for 30 Days” in his 2011 TED Talk. We all have so many things we want to change about ourselves; however, we can’t change them overnight and we surely cannot change everything all at once. True change must become a HABIT. Your habits become a part of you. Your natural instincts can finally be overcome if you create an IDEA into a habit through daily ACTION.


I have always been “that guy” when it comes to hitting the snooze button on my alarm every 5 minutes for 2-3 hours. It drove my wife crazy!! She HATED me in the mornings. My alarm would go off and she’d wake up and I’d fall back asleep. Every 5 minutes she was reminded of my broken promise to wake up the FIRST time the alarm went off.

I was fortunate enough to have an “ah-ha” moment just over a month ago. I brought my Keurig coffee maker into the bedroom and put it on my night stand next to my alarm. Since that first morning I’ve actually gotten up the FIRST time my alarm goes off. I immediately turn on the coffee maker and make a cup of coffee. Ever since then I’ve been waking up at 5 AM and I’ve never felt so productive and efficient in my life!

Special thanks MUST go to my wife for her patience and kindness for allowing me the time to finally change for the better.

The benefits thus far have been…

1. Happy wife! (Happy life!)

2. Less stress at work and home. (I get my “to do” list for the day started immediately after I make my coffee.)

3. Greater confidence. (I finally BELIEVE myself when I think, “I can change for the better.”)

4. Increased productivity. (I am accomplishing SO MUCH MORE than I thought possible.)

5. Did I mention happy wife??!!!

…these are just a few of the overall benefits of my new found LOVE for waking up early and getting my day started long before I used to.

I don’t know what habits you’ve been WISHING to change, but I assure you that you MUST be creative. What will actually motivate you??? How can you create an environment that fights your instincts?? Have fun with it and each new positive change will create the confidence that you can continue to REPEAT your success.
