What do you want to be the champion of?
What do you lie awake at night and think about when you envision your moment of triumph?
For Ethan Carter III (EC3) that moment of triumph came June 25th, 2015.
As kids we all dream about being on TV and becoming our childhood hero.
For me it was Mark Price of the Cleveland Cavaliers. I used to tell my mom and dad, “When I grow up I’m going to be 6 feet tall, wear number 25 and play for the Cavs.” Unfortunately, I stopped growing after 8th grade and have been 4 inches short of 6 foot ever since. My coordination wasn’t the best and I found myself being able to get to the hoop, but bricking lay ups instead of scoring any points. For me that’s where the dream ended. However, EC3 wouldn’t give up as easy as I did.
I am lucky to call EC3 a friend and he has been an inspiration for me and so many others who witnessed the relentless dedication and sacrifice he has maintained over the last 13 years. In the summer of 2007 EC3 and I were discussing our futures and we kept saying, “One day… one day … one day.” For EC3, that “one day” is today. And he has earned every shred of success he has obtained.
EC3 was kind enough to share his 3 keys to success to becoming the champion of your industry.
You can get official EC3 limited edition merchandise at ShopTNA.com. Personally I think the life-size wall sticker looks great in any home or office!
So what does it take to be the Champion of your Industry?
Here is what EC3 had to say…
1. Failing is fine. Failing is necessary.
Anything worth having takes hard work. Persistence, dedication, any adjective conveying, “Get after it! Do the work!” is crucial to your success.
With that effort though will come failures. Constantly. Always. Forever. That is fine. These are crucial to growth. They are necessary so you can learn.
Injuries. Set backs. Incidents you can’t control and scenarios you couldn’t predict will always arise. All you can do is your job to the best of your abilities. Maximum effort. If you make a mess of everything, clean it up yourself and get back to work.
There are a plethora of way more successful people than I with way better quotes about this, but do not become discouraged from any failure. You can’t. You mustn’t! There is no success without failure. (Read Teddy Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena” and get ready to throttle any opposition.)
2. Complacency is the Enemy
I just wrote this sentence after being completely complacent watching NetFlix, but a phone call from our dear friend James arose me from the comforts of my couch to write this. Having friends assist in battling your complacency helps too!
It happens to us all, falling into the trap of comfort. In work, in personal relationships, in leisure, in viewing habits (I won’t ever not watch an episode of Seinfeld if it’s on,) etc.
Be different. Take a risk. Think outside the box. Don’t look to what’s happening in the now, but look what is necessary to change going into the future. When you reach a great success do not rest on the laurels of it! You can’t. You mustn’t! It’ll be gone before you realize it.
Success doesn’t just come from playing by the rules, it comes from changing the game.
3. It’s over when YOU win.
Do not quit. Stop. Don’t. Don’t even think about. Knock that off!
What do you want to do?
Why do you want to do it?
How bad do you want to do it?
Then go do it! Your goals are attainable! (Really, they truly are.)
A Champion will get kicked in the face. Get spit on. You will be ridiculed for following your dream. Abused. Neglected. Punished. Berated. Devastated.
You will fight from underneath. You will strive. You will take the abuse and you will remember the taste of every bite. You become battle tested. Stronger. Better. Smarter.
You are vindicated. You are just. You are reborn.
Do not stop until you get what you deserve. STAY IN THE GAME! Have pride in yourself, belief in who you are, confidence in what you have become. DO NOT STOP (this is a continuing trend.)
You will get what you want. You will win.
Why? Because, it’s not over until you do.
… a powerful message from a true battle tested rise to the top.
My fellow leaders you can win. You can be the Champion of your Industry!
